Universal Credit: How Much - Transitional SDP Payment

  • Since 16th January 2019 - Regulations have been in force that create a new 'Gateway Condition'. This means that no-one who would lose the Severe Disability Premium on claiming UC can make a new claim until the claimant is managed migrated onto UC - more info here.

  • But many claimants lost their SDP by moving onto UC before this 'Gateway Condition' was introduced who are worse off on UC than when they were on legacy benefits, due to losing the Severe Disability Premium. Many of these claimants will now receive compensation - the Transitional SDP Payment.

  • And there will be some claimants who made a claim for UC on or after 16th January 2019 - because, at that time they were not entitled to the SDP - but who have since received an award of benefit that means that they now would have failed the SDP gateway. Many of these claimants should also receive compensation - the Transitional SDP Payment.

  • For those entitled, they will receive both a lump sum back payment to compensate them for the loss since making their claim for UC, plus an extra amount paid on top of their UC award for each subsequent month they continue to meet the qualifying rules (until their 'conversion date').

  • The Regulations outlining how this Payment will work - The UC (Managed Migration Pilot and Miscellaneous Amendments) Regulations 2019 were finally laid before Parliament on 22nd July 2019.
