Can a couple get the Transitional SDP Element?
Yes, where a couple are making a new claim for UC together and they both meet the eligibility criteria for the Transitional SDP Element then they will be entitled to it.

Example

Maggie and Dianna have been claiming Income-Related ESA as a couple. Their award includes a double SDP as they both receive daily living PIP, no-one else lives with them, and no-one gets paid Carers Allowance or has a Carer Element included in an award for UC for looking after either of them.

They move home into a new LA area and make a new claim for UC. As they both meet the eligibility criteria for the Transitional SDP Element on the first day of their couple UC claim, their UC award includes the Transitional SDP Element.

Example

Lauren has been claiming Income-Related ESA as a single person. Her award includes an SDP as she receives daily living PIP, no-one else lives with her, and no-one gets paid Carers Allowance or has a Carer Element included in an award for UC for looking after her.

She is moving in with Robin who is also receiving Income-Related ESA as a single person and his award includes an SDP too. He has two children age 6 and 9 and also receives Child Tax Credit.

They move in together and make a new claim for UC. As they both meet the eligibility criteria for the Transitional SDP Element on the first day of their couple UC claim, their UC award includes the Transitional SDP Element.
