Housing Costs Contributions - Non-dep Couples
Where a non-dependant is living with the claimant, a 'Housing Costs Contribution' (ie non-dependant deduction) will be made - unless they fall into one of the situations where no deduction applies - click here.

For non-dependant couples, a Housing Costs Contribution will be taken for each of them if applicable because for the purposes of UC they are classed as two individuals.

Examples
For non-dependant couples - a Housing Costs Contribution will be taken for each of them if applicable.

Example 1:

Simon claims Universal Credit. He is the tenant of a three bedroom house with his grown up son and his son's partner. Simon is 52 years old, his son, Tom, is 27, and his son's girlfriend, Lizzie, is 24.
Tom works full time - and earns £350 a week.
Lizzie isn't working at the moment although she is looking for work.
When Simon's Universal Credit award is assessed there will be two non-dependant deductions from his Housing Costs Element - one for Tom and one for Lizzie.

Example 2:

Ruth claims Universal Credit. She is the tenant of a two bedroom flat. Her sister, Tammy and Tammy's partner Beth also live there. Ruth is 32 years old, Tammy is 28, and Beth is 27.
Tammy works full time - and earns £240 a week.
Beth works part time - and earns £130 a week. Beth also gets standard rate daily living component of Personal Independence Payment.
When Ruth's Universal Credit award is assessed there will be one HCC from her Housing Costs Element - for Tammy. There is no deduction for Beth as she gets daily living PIP.

Example 3:

Lima claims Universal Credit. She is the tenant of a three bedroom house. Her son, his wife and their daughter live with her. Lima is 48 years old, her son, Tarek is 26, his wife Rasha is 24 and their daughter is two years old.
Tarek works full time and earns £270 a week.
Rasha is not working at the moment.
When Lima's Universal Credit award is assessed, as Tarek and Rasha are responsible for a child under 5, there should be no HCC for either of them.
