Who Can Claim: Special Groups
Universal Credit is a complex benefit and extra rules exist for some claimants - click on the links below for more information.

16 & 17 year olds

To receive an award of Universal Credit the claimant must meet certain basic conditions. Find out what these are.

Couples

In many parts of GB, as well as meeting the basic conditions, the claimant must also meet extra 'Gateway Conditions'.

People from Abroad

To be eligible for UC a claimant must not be a "person subject to immigration control" and must be "habitually resident" in the UK.

Students

Most full time students cannot claim UC but there are exceptions, and special rules apply to the claim and to the award calculation.

Prisoners/Remand

Particular rules apply when a claimant goes to prison, depending on circumstances. What if someone else is left in the property?

Supported Housing

Special rules apply to certain categories of supported housing, including some claimants who are actually living in general needs housing!
